Monday September 15 :: 8:00->9:30pm
at Head and Hands - 5833 Sherbrooke West (near Draper)
What is involved when we think? Are there rules for clear thinking in order to counter sloppy thinking? Can sloppy thinking even be called thinking? Certain distinctions have to be made; the difference between information (fact) and opinion (belief) and the implications for argumentation, non-valid argumentation in our daily lives and society, syllogisms and logic. The discussion will involve some theory but this will be learnt through hands-on examination of our own thinking (argumentation) and what passes for thinking in our society. Given that there are elections coming up North and South of the border, there will be no lack of material for our examination. Participants will be asked to read at least one daily newspaper (editorials, letters to the editor and op-ed page) and a few selected political speeches. The first discussion will be about “thinking about thinking “, what it means and implies and start with some very basic distinctions, fact, information, objective versus opinion, belief, subjective. Can we distinguish one from the other? How do we distinguish one from the other?
Participation is limited to 12 people, so please pre-register at bkarasek@videotron.ca
Former Philosophy professor instructor Bogdan Karasek will lead the discussions over a course of 6 Mondays (from Sept 15 - Oct 20). After 32 years of teaching at Collège de Valleyfield, Bogdan has retired and directed his passions towards photography.
