About the Montreal Freeschool

The Montreal Freeschool is a grassroots initiative of individuals acting collectively to create educational opportunities for children and adults outside of the institutional environment of formal schooling. We are a not for profit group, working with the support of MUCS (Montreal Urban Community Sustainment) to construct a network in which skills, information and knowledge are shared via classes and workshops without the hierarchy or costs associated with other paths to learning. We invite everyone to participate and welcome all people regardless of age, race, orientation or physical or mental ability. How we began

On December 13th, 2007 we had our first visioning meeting for the Montreal Freeschool. We had an evening filled with inspiration and a series of fertile discussions with the 30 people in attendance.

People of all ages from all over the city and outlying areas attended, with a diversity of interests and experiences. Among the attendants we had radical un-schoolers, homeschooling parents and kids. We had people with experiences with other free schools, including the Tatamagouche Summer Free School in Nova Scotia, and the Free School in Albany New York. There were also representatives from the University of the Streets Cafe, and the Centre Social Auto-Gérer.

From there we  decided to organize a three-month experimental semester of the Freeschool, starting March 2008.   It was a success!  We had over 50 exciting and diverse workshops ranging on topics from politics to knitting to kids’ events. See the archive section for details.

What are we doing now?

This fall 2008 we are continuing to organize and promote workshops.  If you are interested in participating or helping to organize, please fill out this form or contact us.

We have created new partnerships with some businesses and community groups in NDG.   They have offered to let us use space in their establishments to host workshops, so we are now looking for people to offer workshops in these new locales!  Many thanks to these groups:
